If I tell you "Wendover" you probably will not react, But Bonneville, just next to this small border city, is Rome, Jerusalem and Mecca all together, at least for speed fans. This is the place where history was written, where legends started, where the most exciting world records were set, where passionate men lived their dreams, and other lost their lives. Located at the border between Utah and Nevada, a small route leads to the famous salt pan.

The first race here was in 1896, it was a ......bicycle race

Than the first of a long series of crazy drivers T. Tetzlaff set a first world speed record in 1914: 228 km/h. In the thirties the famous David Campbell set many new world records. Finally in 1970, Gary Gabelich, on a rocket powered racing car broke the magic 1000 km/h mark, with 1001,67 km/h over 1 mile.

There are no restrictions to access the track, and, of course I made myself the pleasure to drive my bike at top speed over a part of this 16km long track. But my oversized and overweight BMW, run out of breath at 172 km/h already. If only I have had my MV Agusta, and rev it up to over 300 km/h!
