Gobustan is a prehistorical site situated some 65 km south of Baku. It is a Unesco World heritage site. It has more than 6000 rock engravings dating back between 5000 and 40000 B.C.

Most of the rock engravings depict primitive men, animals, battle-pieces, ritual dances, bullfights, and boats with armed oarsmen, warriors with lances in their hands, camel caravans, pictures of sun and stars.

The famed Norwegian anthropologist Thor Heyerdahl returned many times to Azerbaijan between 1961 and his death in 2002 to study the site in his "Search for Odin".

In 1948 a  Latin rock inscription was discovered nearby, which is the easternmost Roman evidence to be known
