We waited till sunset, took our torches and started climbing up a steep hill leading to the mythical site of Chimaera.
I had already heart of this place where stones were burning. Apparently there is leaking natural gas which fires itself by the contact with air. If you extinguish the flames they will start up again by themselves. But nobody really knows the truth about these flames burning since antique times. The legend says that Bellerophon rode on Pegasus to slay a fire-breathing monster. He got too arrogant. Zeus punished him, and here is the warning. Dozens of flames, up to 1 meter high burst out of the stones, the smell of gas is evident, but the spectacle is breathtaking. This is really a mythical place. No wonder, a temple was built here as well.
